Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells, causing them to build up rapidly on the surface. This buildup results in scaly, red patches that can be itchy or even painful. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder, which means the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells. It’s a condition that often comes and goes, with flare-ups triggered by stress, infections, injuries, or even certain medications.

There are several types of psoriasis, with plaque psoriasis being the most common. It appears as raised, silvery scales, usually on the elbows, knees, or scalp. Other types include guttate psoriasis, which presents as small red spots, and inverse psoriasis, which appears in skin folds like under the breasts or around the groin.

While there’s no cure for psoriasis, treatments can significantly reduce symptoms. Topical creams, such as those containing corticosteroids or vitamin D analogs, are often the first line of defense. For more severe cases, systemic medications or biologic drugs that target specific parts of the immune system may be necessary. Phototherapy, where the skin is exposed to controlled doses of UV light, is another effective option. Keeping skin moisturized and avoiding known triggers can help manage flare-ups.

Variations:

  • Plaque Psoriasis: The most common type, characterized by raised, red patches covered with a silvery scale.
  • Guttate Psoriasis: Appears as small, droplet-shaped sores, often triggered by infections.
  • Inverse Psoriasis: Red, shiny lesions found in skin folds.
  • Pustular Psoriasis: White pustules surrounded by red skin, often on the hands and feet.
  • Erythrodermic Psoriasis: A severe form causing widespread redness, shedding, and discomfort.

General Interventions:

  • Topical Treatments: Corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs, and coal tar.
  • Systemic Medications: Methotrexate, cyclosporine, and biologic therapies targeting immune pathways.
  • Phototherapy: Controlled exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can reduce symptoms.
